When she’s not perfecting the faces of some of Hollywoods biggest babes (Jennifer Garner, Molly Sims, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Lawrence—we could go on and on!), the Austrian-born beauty, and sought-after celebrity makeup artist, can be found giving us common-folk tips on her popular YouTube channel. Here, she talks to us about how she keeps her hair healthy on vacation, her dislike of gel manicures, and the curling iron she’s obsessed with.
Describe your beauty routine when you’re traveling?
I try to keep my beauty routine very simple when I travel but one thing I usually bring is a great facial mask. I love the SK-II Facial Treatment Mask. I love how bright and plump my skin feels and looks after. It’s also amazing after a long flight!
What’s your hair routine away from home?
I usually use the shampoo and conditioner from the hotel but I will bring a good hair mask, especially if I go on a beach vacation because my hair gets dry from the sun, and I have highlights, so the mask really helps with shine and volume. The one I absolutely adore is Kerastase Chroma Captive. And I can’t go anywhere without my Sarah Potempa curling iron—I am in love with it!
What are the beauty products you can’t travel without?
Jan Marini Spf 30—I love that this smells really clean and it doesn’t go on greasy. You can put it under your makeup or on top, and either way it provides great protection. Sisley Black Rose Cream mask—I never leave home without it! Fresh Soy Face Cleanser—I am obsessed with this cleanser and can’t go anywhere without it. I clean my face with it and it removes my eye makeup without stinging my eyes. It smells like cucumbers and it doesn’t dry out my skin—seriously one of my most favorite products! It also comes in a convenient travel size and that way I don’t have to pack a separate eye makeup remover. I love using St. Tropez Bronzing Mousse to get a little jump start on my tan. It looks so natural and I look like I got a tan without spending hours lying in the sun. I have been using the Dr. Hauschka Lip Care Stick for years! It’s all natural and smells super yummy. It also creates a nice hydrated looking sheen without feeling greasy. Chanel Les Beiges bronzer in #50 is my go-to bronzer. The color is perfect for me and I love that there is no shimmer in it—I use it for contouring and to add a little color to my face. For a foundation, YSL Touche Éclat is one of my favorites. I really love the finish on it. It gives my skin the perfect glow and radiance. I use a very little amount just to even out my skin tone.
Do you have a favorite nail color for travel?
My most favorite nail color is Ladylike by Essie.
For travel, do you do a regular mani/pedi or gels?
I totally prefer a regular mani/pedi. I’ve never have been a fan of gels—I don’t like all the chemicals that come along with that kind of treatment. My recommandation is to find an awesome manicurist who really knows how to paint well. My mani usually lasts me for one full week and if I’m away longer than that I will bring individual nail polish remover wipes—they’re great for traveling.
Have you ever discovered a foreign beauty brand or product while you were traveling that you fell in love with?
Yes, in Paris I love going to the local pharmacies—I always find the most amazing stuff there. But the one product I found that I can’t live without, is a cream called Homeoplasmine—it’s amazing for dry patches and dry lips.
If your luggage was lost, what are the 5 items you would buy at the local drug store?
Toothbrush/toothpaste, sunscreen, mascara, lipgloss and bronzer.
What are some of your must-have items for travel?
My iPad, a good over-the-shoulder bag (I’m obsessed with my new Celine Trio), and a great book. I just finished The Goldfinch, which was one of my most favorite reads in a long time! It took me 2 months to finish it but I’m so glad I did.
Do you exercise while you’re traveling?
It really depends on where I am going. If I’m on a beach vacation I just run around with my kids and walk a ton, but if I go on a press tour for work with a client, I try to hit the gym in the morning because it really helps with my jet lag.
What brand of luggage do you use?
I’m obsessed with all of my Rimowa luggage! They’re built like a German car, I can’t live without them.
What about your carry-on bag?
Rimowa and a good over-the-shoulder purse.
What are your favorite destinations to travel to?
My family and I go at least once a year down to Cabo, Mexico. We love it because it’s so close to Los Angeles and we can take short trips, plus we like being in a different country with a different culture. We also love going to the island of Kauai in Hawaii. My husband is from Germany and I am from Austria, and all our family is back in Europe so we always go there once a year to visit family and friends. Our kids go in the summer for 3 weeks by themselves and then I usually go pick them up at the end of the trip.
