With an nod to classic, ‘old Hollywood’ style (think 1940’s Rita Hayworth), Charlotte Dellal, the founder and creative genius behind one of our favorite luxury shoe & accessories brands, Charlotte Olympia, is constantly traveling the globe—for work, for pleasure, and everything in between. Here, the London-born designer shares a list of her personal ‘favorites’—including her favorite restaurant in Tokyo, and the shopping destinations at the top of her list.
Favorite hotel:
Burgh Island, off the coast of Devon, is an Art Deco hotel filled with charm…you feel like you have gone back in time! Black tie is encouraged for the evenings, which is a great excuse to dress up. I am a huge Agatha Christie fan and this is where she wrote my favourite novel, Evil Under the Sun. For my birthday last year I took my friends there for a 1930’s weekend getaway.
Favorite restaurant:
I love Japanese food and Inakaya West in Tokyo is one of my favorite restaurants. It’s a robata-style grill where you sit at a bar in front of all the fresh food and watch the chefs cook with great showmanship!
Favorite city:
Tokyo! I love Japan and enjoy traveling somewhere far away in a different time zone. I love the culture and the food and it was great discovering a place which is modern but not Western. Rio de Janeiro is my true ‘home-away-from-home’. My mother is Brazilian so I visit as often as I can.
Favorite airline:
It really depend where I’m traveling to, but I tend to fly with British Airways quite often.
Favorite airport:
Heathrow.
Favorite seat on the plane:
I tend to sleep better by a window seat.
Favorite in-flight beverage:
I drink as much water as I can.
Favorite in-flight entertainment:
I actually enjoy the quite moments and try & catch up on my reading and the latest movies and magazines. I never travel without Bananagrams, which is a word game I can play by myself or with a group of friends.
Favorite brand of luggage:
I recently bought a Globe-Trotter trunk I have been coveting for years. It makes packing a lot easier as there is one big space to fit everything in.
Favorite brand of carry-on bag:
My Ami canvas tote bag has enough pockets to be organised and is the perfect size to carry all you need; it seems to magically grow bigger to accommodate everything I put in it.
Favorite travel outfit:
I never travel without my Cat Nap set—comfortable satin Kitty slippers that come with an eye mask and a convenient bag to keep all my travel essentials in. Oh, and I always accessorise with a silk headscarf to keep my 1940’s waves in place.
Favorite in-flight essentials:
I love Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream—I discovered it on a British Airways flight and love it. It keeps my skin hydrated and I adore the smell.
Favorite fashion accessory to travel with:
My transparent Pandora clutch bag because it goes with everything and helps me travel light.
Favorite beauty-essentials you travel with:
Mac Ruby Woo lipstick—I almost always have red lips, it instantly makes feel glamorous.
By Terry Touch-Expert—I wear very little make up, but this highlighter brightens up my eyes.
Sisley Black Rose Cream Mask—keeps my skin feeling hydrated.
Caudalie Divine Oil for body, face and hair—I love oils and this is light and smells amazing.
Bioderma Sensibio H2O—the perfect cleanser for removing all traces of dirt.
Eau de Gingembre scent by Roger & Gallet.
L’Oreal Tecni Art hairspray—keeps my hair in place.
Favorite travel gadgets:
My mini iPad keeps my kids entertained! Good headphones are essential if I plan on watching a marathon of movies—I always steal my husbands Beats By Dre headphones.
Favorite shopping destinations:
I like shopping for vintage things in America. The last time I went to Miami I enjoyed the Lincoln Road flea market, which is open on Sunday’s, and hunting around C. Madeleine’s vintage store in North Miami Beach. I also love walking around Paris–besides being beautiful but you can also do some great shopping! Rue de Grenelle and the PalaisRoyal are good destinations.
Favorite spa:
Every summer I go to Capri with my husband, three boys, and my in-laws. They have been going for years and stay at the Capri Palace Hotel which has a great spa, which I try to visit as often as possible during our stay.
Favorite ski resort:
Courchevel! I used to go a lot when I was younger and am about to go back for the first time in 15 years.
Favorite beach:
The first thing I do when I arrive in Rio, and last thing I do before I leave, is go for a run up and down Ipanema Beach, followed by a dip in the sea and a fresh coconut. The view is one of my favorites in the world.
Favorite hotel pool:
I prefer swimming in the sea, but Hotel du Cap Eden Roc, in the south of France, has a beautiful infinity pool right on the sea.
Favorite item from the hotel mini-bar:
M&M’s!
Favorite item to order from room service:
French fries…to satisfy midnight cravings!
Favorite items to pilfer from the housekeeping cart:
Shower caps to keep my hair set in my signature 1940’s waves.
Favorite way to beat jet-lag:
I always unpack as soon as I get to my hotel room so that I can get my bearings and adjust to my new environment.
Favorite vacation destination:
I love traveling and discovering new places. This Easter I am going to Rio de Janeiro (my home away from home!), with my husband and our 3 boys. My mother is Brazilian so I always try to visit whenever I can—it is a very special part of the world.
Favorite find/souvenir from your travels:
1950’s ceramic, mermaid figurines from Miami—I collect mermaids and find them wherever I go.
Favorite childhood memory of traveling:
Setting up a camp with my three siblings in our row of seats on the plane. There were no iPads or individual tv screens, so the journey was much more of an adventure, making up our own games and entertaining each other.
