The fashion designer, most famous for dressing stylish brides around the globe, talks to us about her favorite airport, the travel-apps she loves and how she deals with jet lag.
How often do you travel?
I travel constantly, whether it is to NYC every fashion or bridal week or to store events. I just recently came back from a Middle East event tour which included stops in Dubai, Qatar and Kuwait!
Number of countries visited?
I don’t know as traveling is something that was engrained in me from a young age. I have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel extensively in Europe and Asia.
Aisle or Window?
When I travel by myself I like to sit in the aisle so I can get up and go as I please. I don’t have to disturb anyone near me. When I travel with my family I love the window, I don’t have to feel bad falling asleep and I always love to look out into the sky.
Air France is luxury at its best combining aesthetics and privacy. Their personalized service makes you feel taken care of the minute you reach the airport. When you step on the plane they provide you with lounge wear to slip into, a dust bag for your shoes, slippers, plus a travel kit consisting of a selection of Biologique Recherche facial and body care products. I am instantly relaxed. There is even an auto massage function on their chairs!
Hong Kong Airport is one of the busiest airports however the Cathay Pacific provides an incredibly amazing respite for its travelers. There are six different lounges offering luxurious amenities, fine dining and unique design features. Once I entered in the lounge I forgot I was in Hong Kong, it was a haven to relax and allowed me to maintain productivity while being on the road!
What type/brand of luggage do you use?
I use Rimowa luggage for my travel. The luggage is sleek, lightweight and combines modern technology with old-world craftsmanship. When I travel internationally it is important to have luggage that is nearly indestructible.
What type/brand of carry-on do you use?
What are your travel essentials?
When I am on an airplane it is very important for me to be hydrated. One spray of Evian Mineral Water Spray hydrates my skin and revives my makeup. I also use Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream to moisturize my dry skin. My other go-to travel essentials are my Beats By Dre headphones, Sunglasses, and my iPhone.
What’s your travel uniform?
Casual chic. I usually travel in jeans, comfortable boots, a button down shirt and a sweater since it gets chilly in the plane.
Airplane food or bring your own?
I always drink a ton of water on the flight so I am not dehydrated when I land. I will also indulge in a glass of Sancerre, it always puts me in the right mood.
Music on your iPod?
If it’s a night flight I listen to something more peaceful like John Mayer or Josh Grobin. However if it’s a short flight, I try to listen to something more upbeat, like Robin Thicke or Pharrell!
What’s your choice of in-flight entertainment?
Flying allows me to catch up on movies and fashion magazines.
Gadget you can’t leave home without?
I know its cliché but I really cannot live without my iPhone. Pictures of my kids, emails, travel information, my schedule, contacts, music–I literally have everything on this device, it controls my life!
Do you use any travel apps?
I use all the airline apps, it certainly makes traveling so seamless. I also love DESTI, it’s exclusive to the iPad and compares accommodations, attractions, activities and dining – all on one colorful interface.
How do you deal with jetlag?
Lots of Espresso! I also change my time on my watch of the location I am going to. When I am on the plane I adjust to that time zone. I know it’s a mental thing but it helps me every time!
What’s your exercise routine when you’re traveling?
I try to work out when I am traveling but sometimes it is difficult with my busy schedule. However I will always make time for a long walk.
Do you have any great travel advice?
Pack wisely and pack your outfits by the day so you know exactly what you are wearing.
Worst travel experience?
My worst travel experience was when I lost my suitcase during Paris couture fashion week. It was lost for 4 days. Luckily I was in Paris, the fashion capital…not so lucky however for my wallet!
Do you have any travel rituals/superstitions?
I always say a prayer of thanks and safe journeys before I takeoff.
